On 8 April 2026 the official launch of the Syria-led “Breath of Freedom” Task Force took place at the Technical Secretariat of the OPCW.

In presence of OPCW Director-General, Fernando Arias, the participants of this Task Force, amongst them Germany, introduced their work to interested OPCW States Parties (Link to OPCW press statement)

The aim of this Task Force is to support the new Syrian government to completely destroy the remnants of the Assad-era chemical weapons program in a secure, sustainable and verifiable way in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention.
