On 12 July 2024 the OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Fernando Arias, and Ambassador Thomas Schieb signed an agreement on a voluntary contribution of Germany for the AI-Conference, to be held in Morocco in October 2024.

This conference follows the Berlin Conference on “Artificial Intelligence and Weapons of Mass Destruction”, here the link to the conference website.

The rapid advances in the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly becoming relevant for arms control policy.

AI applications can dangerously lower the technological threshold for developing chemical agents of warfare. “We have no time to lose in trying to assess the effects of AI on the work of the OPCW.” stated Ambassador Thomas Schieb. For more information here the link to the OPCW press release.
